News from the European Sexual Dysfunction Alliance

Patients First project

The European Sexual Dysfunction Alliance (ESDA) was the focus of the Patients First Lilly ICOS program at the ESSM congress in Copenhagen in December 2005. The theme “Patients First” encouraged visitors to the stand to learn more about the work of ESDA and its affiliates throughout Europe. We are delighted to have taken part in this excellent initiative for the benefit of patients.

The aim of this activity is to replace promotional items at the booth and to donate those funds to patient groups relevant to ED. This 'Patients First' initiative had already been successfully done in the area of mental illness.

Here is how it worked:

Voting occurred in an area of the exhibit that contained information on the advocacy group as well as the Patients First program. Physicians visiting the booth received information on the advocacy group via an exhibition panel (no representative of the advocacy groups was permitted to affect the voting process in any way at the voting area). They were then given voting tokens, one at a time, which they used to vote for one of the pre-selected advocacy groups. The Advocacy Partner Selection Criteria was based on the merits of the organization’s work with patients affected by erectile dysfunction. Voters were not limited to how many tokens they could gather and vote; in fact the exhibit staff encouraged them to vote as often as they wished. They also communicated the importance of making a difference in the patients’ lives.
Each token had a value of €5 and votes were counted at the end of each day and tallied at completion of the congress.

As you can see from the photos below the activity was a great success and we sincerely hope it will be done again at future scientific meetings, it is a wonderful way to support the work of patient advocacy groups.
